Bulgaria keen to find a place on the 2011 F1 calendar

Friday 3rd July 2009

Bulgarian officials are set to meet with Bernie Ecclestone next week in the hope of securing a place on the 2011 F1 calendar.

Bulgarian Motorcycling Federation president Bogdan Nikolov told Reuters that grand prix organising committee chief Rumen Petkov will meet with Ecclestone at next weekend's German GP to discuss Bulgaria's future in F1.

He added that the Bulgarian Motorcycling Federation has two proposals for a circuit, which is likely to be situated near the northern town of Pleven, are now waiting for Ecclestone's approval.

"We've already submitted our plan a few months ago and it was considered by Formula One Management," Nikolov said.

"According to the draft, Bulgaria could sign a contract to host a Formula 1 race between 2011 and 2015 and there's an option for a contract extension until 2020."

Bulgaria is just one of many countries looking for a place in Formula One, with Argentina and Mexico, as well as others, also reportedly in talks with the F1 supremo.

"'finolait' yes, I suppose you're right, but I wonder if there's not 'some potential for the Country's benefit?' I do hope not. As we know F1 circuits cost a mint and then, sometimes at a whim, are dropped from the circus, perhaps to a circuit in the Middle East, I would love to think that Bernie was being truly altruistic in helping out a burgeoning economy and not just to make some good returns for The FOM. I love to but...... Thanks, I really appreciate you comment. kind regards, Max."

"I hope India is coming on the calendar! They have postponed that like 2 or 3 times already! "

"To Max-Headroom. Yes you are correct, it is exploitation. But look at the article again. It is the Bulgarians that are wanting to be fleeced by Bernie. They are the ones looking for a GP, and of course Bernie will be glad to please. He must be rubbing his hands already. In glee"
