Fastest lap times: Same old story for Kimi

Sunday 7th September 2008

Kimi Raikkonen must be wondering if the fastest lap is some sort of bad omen for him.

The Finn set the fastest lap at the Belgian Grand Prix, but he once again failed to convert his quick lap time into victory after crashing out in the final stages of the race.

The World Champion has recorded the fastest lap time in eight races this season, but on only one occasion - more than four months ago in Spain - did he go on to win the race.

Raikkonen was the only driver to dip under the 1:48sec mark at Spa-Francorchamps. His fastest time of 1:47.930 was 0.205 faster than that of race winner Lewis Hamilton.

Felipe Massa and Heikki Kovalainen were separated by just a thousand of a second in third and fourth place respectively. Robert Kubica completed the top with a time of 1:48.965.

Sebastien Bourdais, who held his own for majority of race and settled for two points after a frantic finale, proved that his performance was no fluke, setting the sixth fastest lap time of 1:49.002. Fernando Alonso, who finished in fourth place, was only ninth fastest on the day.
