Mark Webber concedes he is surprised to find himself on the front row of the grid for Sunday's British GP.
The Red Bull driver put in a late effort in Q3 to take pole position ahead of the likes of Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton. However, a stunning final lap from Heikki Kovalainen had Webber relegated to second place by over half a second.
But despite missing out on pole position, P2 still stands as Webber's best qualifying result of the season and comes just days after Red Bull awarded the Aussie a new one-year deal.
"A bit of a surprise actually," the 31-year-old said during the post-qualifying press conference.
"We have been pretty strong most of the weekend but I didn't know how strong until Q2. In relation to the rest of the guys we are normally competing against we have a good margin.
"It is a credit to the team. They have worked so hard like all the teams have. It is a bit of a home grand prix for our Red Bull guys and it is a proud moment for them, so five percent of the job done.
"It could be wet tomorrow but we have done our job today. I can't wait for tomorrow."
