Toro Rosso's Canadian GP went from bad to worse after it was revealed that Sebastien Bourdais would face a gearbox penalty.
While team-mate Sebastian Vettel failed to take part in Saturday's qualifying after causing significant damage to his car in his morning crash, Bourdais did compete as the team was able to repair the damage he did to his STR3 in his own separate hunt.
However, the team later revealed that although they were able to fix Bourdais's car, they were not able to repair his gearbox, which means he will face a five-grid slot penalty.
The Frenchman, who had qualified in 16th place, is provisionally set to line-up in 19th and last place on the grid. Vettel, meanwhile, will be starting the race from pit lane in his new chassis.
STR's Franz Tost said: "Bourdais went off at Turn 4, damaging the right hand side suspension. The wishbones broke and the right hand driveshaft came out of the gearbox, which means the box had to be changed.
"Sebastien will therefore take a five place penalty on the grid."
He added: "Our drivers always try hard. To paraphrase a well known saying: better to have tried and lost than never tried at all!"
