Vettel never doubted he would succeed

Thursday 12th June 2008

Sebastian Vettel says even if the face of his dismal start to this season he never once doubted his ability to succeed.

The German struggled in the opening races of this year's Championship, wracking up four retirements and P17 result before finally getting in the points at the Monaco GP.

That race saw the Toro Rosso driver bag four points before adding another one to his tally when he held off McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen to claim the final points-paying position in Canada.

Asked recently if his self confidence had taken a knock prior to his first points-finish of the season, Vettel told the official F1 website: "Never!

"The first four races, when we had those first-lap incidents, was something completely out of my reach - so why rack my brains over it. I simply focused on the next race.

"The first real chance for me was Monaco and I took it with both hands. And in Montreal I scored one point, although the last 10 laps didn't make my life easy as the cars I had behind were quite strong

"That's all that matters."

Something else that matters, though, is the future of Toro Rosso, which is unclear after Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz put his 50 percent stake in the team up for sale.

Vettel, though, insists the team's future is looking bright. "I know a little bit of the internal situation so I am very confident," he said.

As for his own future the German says the end goal is to race for one of F1's big name teams - and with reports linking him to a Ferrari drive that goal could become a reality in the not-too-distant future.

"Of course my target one day is to race for one of the big teams because I am not here to just participate, to enjoy the life and see different countries - I am here to race," he said.
